Rail-SIT is the module of the Road-SIT Survey Suite developed for the railway inspection with the Laser Mobile Mapping. Its main features are the automatic rail detection, the track and catenary feature extraction and geometry generation,  the clearance interference analysis, the section, plan and profile creation, and the report generation.

Mobile Mapping systems are more and more successfully implemented and exploited in the railway sector, as they allow the line detection with minimum effort and great efficiency, results not achievable with traditional tools. The Rail-SIT application has been developed to optimize the analysis and inspection activities for railroads, providing effective tools and automatically producing reports on the infrastructure status.

Railhead detection - Track and catenary geometry generation
The point cloud and the trajectory produced with the MMS are automatically processed, to identify the railheads, on the line run and also on the parallel line in the case of double-track. Rail-SIT automatically calculates the track center line, gauge, superelevation, and catenary. All geometries can be integrated and edited with the graphic functions provided by the Road-SIT photogrammetry application.

Dynamic generation of clearance outlines and interference calculation

Among the various objectives that can be attained with a railway inspection, the check of the interferences is one of most important. Rail-SIT automatically generates the profile of each section, at a constant rate, customizable by the user (50 cm by default).
The clearance is calculated parametrically as a function of the radius of curvature, the speed rank, and the uncompensated acceleration. The clearance definition is carried out according to the most widespread international standards, in special external files., which can be edited by the user.

Cylindrical views of tunnel vaults

For the tunnel inspection, the system generates cylindrical views of the point cloud developed on a plane. The laser-scanner color intensity or the distance from the clearance outline can be represented by using different color ramps. The cylindrical views thus obtained, clearly show the maintenance status of the vault and the actual and potential interferences.

Checks and inspections – Fixing the end track position

The Rail-SIT provides features for checking the following:

    • Sections where the track position is uncertain or not detectable (i.e. switches)
    • Out-of-range track gauge or inconsistent superelevation with respect to previous or following sections
    • The user can change manually the track position and fix the detected issues.

Automatic generation of documents and reports

Rail-SIT automatically generates the these documents:

      • Sections with dimensions

      • Track plans , with the indication of the generated sections and relating curvature radius
      • Records with the analysis of the interferences and the track geometry.

User Interface 

The main graphic window shows the rail cross section at the current chainage, two side graphic views allow the check of the track position, by zooming the point cloud. The rectangular area below the main window displays the cylindrical view of the inspected railroad section. Here the user can select graphically a point where to view the cross section to be investigated.
A 3D view is also available for the realistic representation of the point cloud with the positioning of rails, catenaries and clearance outlines.

The product suite for the airports comes from the competence of Siteco in survey technologies and software development, a consolidated experience collected and matured in the road environment in over 10 years and with more than 40,000 km of surveys.

The Mobile Mapping System Road-Scanner has been expressly integrated with new equipment targeted to satisfy and implement the requirements of the airport regulations.

The most interesting innovative factor of the solution is the integration in the ESRI ArcGIS system, which allows a complete control of all inspections and maintenance activities in their mapping context. Thanks to this, it is possible to have a view of the infrastructure as a whole and obtain an immediate consultation of the state of repair and of the interventions planned and carried out. With specific functions, the user can plan the maintenance interventions and therefore efficiently optimize both operating costs and pavement life cycle.

The solution proposed by Siteco includes:

  • The sophisticated technology of the MMS Road-Scanner, expressly equipped to allow surveys also at night time thus avoiding  interferences with the air traffic;
  • The Road-SIT PMS application, fully integrated in the powerful ESRI ArcGIS mapping system, providing monitoring and decision support features for the analysis of Maintenance Programs related to Status Indicators;
  • Bearing capacity surveys and structural and design analyses.

 

MODULES SYSTEM

The features of Road-SIT PMS can be classified as follows:

Distress Analysis - This module allows the consultation of the data collected with Road-Scanner, namely high-resolution images, laser scans, scans obtained with the Ground Penetrating Radar, longitudinal roughness data obtained with the profilometer. This module allows the survey of all functional pavement defects that have been registered in the relational database of the system, and carries out monitoring activities, also using "mobile" equipment such as PDA, tablets, etc. The Pavement Condition Index is calculated in accordance with the ASTM D 5340 standards, and output values are updated on the base of the maintenance activities carried out and the results of the inspections.

Data Management System - Road-SIT PMS is designed to acquire all the data collected with the different sensors mounted on the MMS and also other types of data deriving from tests carried out on the airport pavements (e.g. data of friction and bearing capacity). According to the available data, the system calculates specific status indices for the various homogeneous sections of the airport. The sections are divided into areas of constant surface. The GIS views allow the  immediate control of the different parameters.

Decision Management System - The system incorporates the maintenance technologies used by different airports allowing the creation of customized maintenance programs. Every activity can be associated with the results that can be achieved in terms of resolution of structural surface defects and relating costs as well. Through the simulation of different maintenance strategies, the user can choose the best interventions to make. Then the system allows the management of all the activities to be carried out and the re-calculation of the various indices as a result of the interventions implemented.

 WORK METHODOLOGY

Road-SIT Airport PMS is based on the organization of specific information layers of the GIS system, that represent all the PMS data:  routes of the vehicle surveys, survey key points and areas considered in the bearing capacity inspections, PCI areas, relating survey data, and processing. The GIS system also provides the definition of the areas which the airport infrastructure is divided into, according to a precise hierarchical organization.

Subdivision and hierarchical organization of the infrastructure
For a rational management of the pavements, the whole paved surface is split into different areas, based on a hierarchical principle at different levels, also known as Pavement Grid Map. The first level consists of the zones of operations (branches), with different functions: runway, taxiway, links, parking, service roads, etc. These areas are divided again into Homogeneous Sections, i.e. sections with similar design features:

  • Period of construction,
  • Thickness of the pavement and its status of load capacity
  • Traffic or strain level in general.

This division is essential to define the decay curves of each section, and take a decision on the most appropriate maintenance activities to be carried out.

Each section is further split into an adequate number of elementary zones of constant surface area (300-400 m²), defined according to the different indices associated with them (PCI, roughness, load capacity, friction, etc.). For each zone, the indices of degradation are sampled with respect to several structural or functional aspects.

Road-Scanner Survey
The trajectories made by the MMS Road-Scanner are reported on an extra layer, thus facilitating the consultation of the collected data. These trajectories allow the identification on the cartography of the route visible in the imagery that is being consulted and, vice versa, it is also possible to select the most appropriate imagery and examine the area to be checked. The airport surface is covered by the Road-Scanner vehicle in parallel routes at a distance of 4-5 meters. As for runways and taxiways, the survey direction is controlled with a special software that helps the driver to maintain a constant direction.

Survey of the Status of Surface Degradation
The defects are classified in a catalog according to the ASTM D6433/2003 specifications, with the aid of special menus that assist the user to assess the level of severity. One of the more interesting components of the proposed methodology is the visual detection of defects, assisted by the consultation of the data obtained with the profilometer and the laser-scanners.

The environment of imagery consultation, integrated in the GIS ArcView, allows an optimal navigation on all surveyed  data and also in the defect database. At all stages, the operator can check the activities carried out in the mapping system.

All the detected surface defects are represented on an extra layer, which contain the related geometries (for example: points for holes, polylines for cracking, polygons for alligator cracking, depressions, rutting). On the basis of the defects that completely or partly belong to PCI areas, it is possible to calculate the corresponding indices, and represent them according to the thresholds of the ASTM specifications. The application also allows the consultation of the surface defects of each single PCI area.

Consultation of the Maintenance Status
All the survey results are represented in ArcGIS and can be immediately displayed on the map, or consulted numerically. It is possible in this way to represent the characteristic bearing values (PCN /ACN, elastic modules, layer thicknesses), PCI indexes, longitudinal roughness, etc. Thanks to this type of representations, the intervention activities can be carried out quickly and effectively.

Management of the Intervention Catalog
With this application it is possible to define different maintenance catalogs. The available databases can be integrated with the Tender Specification. Each catalog allows the user to organize interventions by type, for instance structural or functional interventions, rehabilitation or localized interventions. This organization has the double goal of improving the organization of the interventions and, at the same time, of providing the system with methods for calculating the cost of each intervention. For each intervention, users can define the cost per unit and specify the list of defects that the intervention can solve as well as any residual defect after the maintenance.

Assignment of the Interventions to the Pavement
In order to analyze the cost and extend the residual life of the airport paved surfaces, it is necessary to select the areas and/or the homogeneous sections to which a specific intervention must be assigned. This assignment can be done with a graphic selection directly in the GIS software or filtering areas and sections through appropriate queries to the database according to priority criteria. In this way it is possible to create a Maintenance Plan containing the maintenance interventions selected from the catalog. If the same intervention belongs to different planes, the PMS operator can define different maintenance plans, and compare them in terms of cost, time distribution and residual life of the infrastructure.

Decision Support Tools and Decay Curves
The system also provides tools for the decision support, by simulating different maintenance strategies, the calculation of the PCI and the derived curves of decays. Special functions allow the users to assign the decay curves to the homogeneous sections and therefore to define the timing diagram. Then it is possible to compare the theoretical decay curves with those derived from the observations performed during the monitoring phase. On the basis of these results it will be possible to calibrate the specific curves of the different homogeneous sections.

Road-SIT AM is the Road Information System for the Road Inventory and the Asset Management developed to meet the needs of the road authorities (public administrations and motorway companies) in compliance with the local and European regulations currently in force on this subject (the European Community standard for navigation databases GDF - Geographical Data Files, ISO14825:2004 - and the European Road Administrator Data Exchange Format - RADEF - the standard for the data exchange among different national administrations).

Besides the asset management and maintenance features of the basic module (Road-SIT Explorer), Road-SIT is an excellent tool for storing network data, monitoring the condition of the road network and supporting decisions.

Starting from the road inventory that includes geometrical data (plano-altimetric routes, sections, retaining walls, etc.), to the relating cartographic organization inside the GIS system, all aspects of maintenance and administration are integrated into a single framework with focus on:

  • Sharing all information among all sectors involved in the network management;
  • Updating the database thanks to the computerization of each sector involved;
  • Monitoring the preservation status of the various infrastructure components;
  • Rationalizing and optimizing the economic resources;
  • Managing the road asset;
  • Monitoring and improving the road safety.

Thanks to its functions for solving organizational, logistical, and technical problems, it is part of the Road Global Service, together with specific applications for the maintenance management and work accounting (PlaNET WEB of STR SpA of Gruppo 24 Ore).

System Architecture

Road-SIT includes a well-organized and flexible set of alphanumeric and GIS applications covering all operational needs of the road management, i.e. road assets and graphs, signs, licensing, advertising plants, infrastructure works, accidents, and so on. The system architecture includes the following:

  • A relational database, storing all information relating to roads and road assets in general;
  • The cartographic database i. e. road graphs and background maps.
  • A client-server or WEB application for the road inventory and asset management;
  • A GIS application for the cartographical representation of the surveyed information;
  • Vertical applications for automating the road assets management.

Road-SIT can be integrated with the most common WEBGIS (ArgGIS Server, Mapserver, Autodesk Mapguide, Abaco DBMap, etc.) to integrate alphanumerical and geographical data in a single relational database, such as ESRI ArcSDE, Oracle SDO and complies with the latest Microsoft standard OLEDB (ActiveX Data Object).

The user profiles can be defined by assigning different access permissions (reading, writing, editing and deleting) to the database according to the typology of road assets or territorial jurisdiction (districts, roads, departments, etc..). Users can share all the data through the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.

Asset Management

Road-SIT Explorer, the main module of the suite, allows management, consultation, search and editing of all the road assets. It offers a very user-friendly interface, similar to the one of Windows Explorer, with a complete and flexible set of features. In particular, the navigation tree, through a hierarchical organization of all the elements, allows the access to the following:

  • Roads, a very useful function to represent junctions, branches, etc.
  • Road assets, grouped into families (ex. bridges, galleries and walls belong to the family of infrastructure works).
  • Departments, a classification based on the division into territorial areas, typical of many administrations.

All information concerning the items selected in the tree is displayed in a grid. It’s very easy to edit the list of road assets and interact with the database by using the powerful search, filter and sort functions. Moreover the single road asset items can be associated to any online file: pictures, scanning, reports, technical drawings, spreadsheets of calculation, metric computations, etc. This file can be consulted later using the associated Windows application.

Connection with GIS

Road-SIT is integrated with the most well-known GIS platforms allowing the immediate geographic contextualization of the road inventory, the consultation of the routes, chainages and images. It’s also used to get the rendering of the road assets and to display and change all the alphanumeric data.

More operators can connect simultaneously to a WEBGIS (Road-SIT WS) module and share the mapping using the same GIS license. The graphical representation of road assets is carried out through the dynamic segmentation i.e. the calculation of the geographical coordinates of a specific chainage.

The graph editing module allows the calibration of the roads and a perfect management of the deviations between milestone chainages and the actual road length.

Geo-Referenced Image Database and Google Earth Connection

Road-SIT Explorer allows the consultation of the geo-referenced images, surveyed with the mobile mapping system, as in a virtual inspection. Cameras can be switched one at a time or altogether, or in a synchronized way to view the two-direction survey.

The road axis can be positioned by using Google Earth. This function is particularly useful when working without cartography or when it is necessary to control areas adjacent to the surveyed road.

Road-SIT Survey: Photogrammetry and Point Cloud Measurements

Road-SIT Survey is a powerful module developed to display the geo-referenced images and point clouds surveyed with the Road-Scanner Mobile Mapping System. It allows taking precise measurements of distances, perimeters or areas adjacent to the surveyed road. The main features of the module are the following:

  • Synchronization of all the used cameras, at a selected chainage,
  • Overlapping of the point clouds on the images,
  • Measurements taken on the image frames in mono or stereo photogrammetric mode,
  • Snap of measurements on the point clouds

Road-SIT Survey is also available as plug-in of AutoCAD or Esri ArcGIS, for storing all the surveyed geometries directly in a CAD or GIS database.

Road Signs Management

Road-SIT Signs is a special module conceived to manage the road signs and markings, by retrieving the data from the road asset database. The well-structured database includes administrative and installation data, and the relating administrative documents as well. The administrative documents are associated to the signs and this allows the registration of all reports on licensing, the removal, suspension and relating printing of Word or PDF documents. These reports can then be consulted from any workstation. This application has a special interface developed to have available simultaneously all information on the selected sign as, for instance, the graphical image and the sign snapshot, and exploits the smart functions of the Explorer module to group, search and sort data.

To easily insert or update signs, the module contains a catalog of all signs created according to the international codes. Several standard and customizable report templates are available. They can be customized on the basis of the needs of the managing bodies.

Road-SIT for Mobile Devices

The suite of Road-SIT uses different mobile mapping technologies according to the desired goals. Road-SIT Mobile has been conceived for consulting and updating the road inventory using a Tablet PC to which a part of the database is replicated. This local database is then synchronized with the central system by means of the application Road-SIT SYNC.

The basic purpose of Road-SIT Mobile is to allow the technical office of the Public Administrations to make on site inspections and update the road assets. To this aim, besides the Road-SIT standard features, this module includes special features to work on site and synchronize the surveyed data with the centralized database. The hardware support can be a normal laptop or a Notebook or a Tablet PC.

Road SIT-Mobile allows the survey of the position of the road assets. The point position is detected by the GPS and immediately shown on the cartography.

Siteco product line dedicated to the pavement analysis is the natural consequence of the company  experience in survey technologies and production of road assets and inventories, a great competence matured in over 10 years and with more than 40,000 km of surveys.

The Mobile Mapping System Road-Scanner has been expressly integrated with new equipment focused on the inspection on the state of repair of the pavement while the PMS-SIT application has been completely reorganized to allow an effective management of the activities on the road asset. The most interesting innovative factor of the solution consists in the integration in the ESRI ArcGIS system, which allows a complete control of all data collection and maintenance activities in their mapping context. Thanks to this, it is possible to have a view of the infrastructure as a whole and consult easily and quickly the state of repair and the interventions planned and carried out. Thanks to special functions for programming the maintenance interventions, the user can efficiently optimize the operating costs and get an objective assessment of the quality of the improvements achievable for the pavement.

The solution proposed by Siteco includes:

  • The sophisticated technology of Mobile Mapping System Road-Scanner, which can perform measurements even in low or no light such as in tunnels.
  • The PMS-SIT application, fully integrated with the powerful ESRI ArcGIS mapping system, that provides monitoring and decision support features for the analysis of Maintenance Programs related to Status Indicators.
  • Supplementary surveys concerning the longitudinal and transversal roughness, friction, load capacity and/or core sampling in case of highways or when requested because of the particular conditions of the infrastructure.

WORK METHODOLOGY

Methodology has been developed with the fundamental contribution of the University of Bologna - DICAM (Department of Civil, Environmental and Materials Engineering). The following are the key phases of the process.

Definition of a complete surface defect catalog
All defects of the road pavement have been previously classified according to the catalog defined by the ASTM D6433/2003 specifications. Each defect is represented with the measurement parameter and the geometric characteristics that determine its severity.

Complete defect mapping by means of the high-performance MMS technique
The dimension parameters and the sensor necessary for the survey and the measurement have been defined for each type of defect.  A specific application overlaps the visual data collected with the survey onto the data generated with the other sensors as the laser scanner point clouds. All geometries of the defects are geo-referenced and it is possible to execute measurements of coordinates, lengths and areas on them. All data are stored in a geographic database and can be viewed and tested in a GIS environment and overlapped onto the imageries.

Calculation of indicators of the maintenance status
Besides the IRI index surveyed with the profilometer, other status indicators, in compliance with the main international standards, have been identified. A special attention has been devoted to the Pavement Condition Index that is recognized also at national level. Suitable calculation algorithms process automatically, starting from the defect database, the PCI value for areas of road with constant length, in order to provide a synthetic data on the maintenance status. The index is then used to provide synthesis reports for the whole road asset or the single road.

The PMS renders the synthetic status indexes within a GIS environment and displays the defects per chainage, organizing them by type. It is possible to insert representations derived from external sources, such as historical data of the interventions carried out, traffic data and also meteorology data.  

Definition of a database of maintenance interventions
All interventions that can be carried out on a road asset have been collected in a catalog and split into two main categories:
- General or rehabilitation interventions at different levels of depth, suitable to solve surface, or structural defects (e.g. reinforcement, partial reconstruction, rehabilitation).
- Specific interventions, defined to restore the surface characteristics and the functionality of the road surface in presence of defects such as pothole filling, patches, cracking sealing, thin overlay. 
The catalog is customizable, and therefore it is possible to insert the interventions according to the customer's needs and work habits.

Association of the road maintenance interventions with the road asset
Each intervention is associated with the corresponding road section by means of GIS tools or by indicating the chainage. The choice of which intervention must be performed is left to the designer who can run fast simulations on different areas or with different types of interventions, in order to obtain a simulation with an evaluation of costs. Vice versa, if the designer first selects the defects that must be solved with priority, the application processes the optimal interventions from a technical point of view.

Evaluation of maintenance costs and simulations of PCI recalculation
The system processes the calculation of the road surfaces or of the detail of the defects for the selected routes. Since each intervention is associated with a unit cost, the system  calculates the cost of the intervention or of a set of interventions, grouped into programs. On the basis of the intervention selected, the system recalculates the value of the status index. Thanks to this simulation, the optimal choice is based both on the economic element and on the technical improvement of the state of maintenance.

Regular monitoring and updating of the defect database
The pavement defects can be monitored also with other types of tools: video systems suitable to standard cars or "mobile" systems for precise checks of delimited areas.

SOFTWARE

PMS-SIT consists of 3 modules:

  • Analysis of Defects: It includes, within the GIS-editor, the features for the visualization and management of the survey data obtained with the MMS Road-Scanner or from external sources.
  • Maintenance Management: It allows the definition of intervention catalogs and their organization in maintenance plans; it also calculates the cost of each intervention or the total cost of each plan.
  • Decision Support: It is specifically dedicated to the production of statistical synthesis reports using the data collected in the database of defects, to the calculation of the Status Index and the simulation of different maintenance strategies.

Then the system allows the management of all the activities to be carried out and the re-calculation of the various indices as a result of the interventions implemented.

 WORK METHODOLOGY

Road-SIT Airport PMS is based on the organization of specific information layers of the GIS system, that represent all the PMS data:  routes of the vehicle surveys, survey key points and areas considered in the bearing capacity inspections, PCI areas, relating survey data, and processing. The GIS system also provides the definition of the areas which the airport infrastructure is divided into, according to a precise hierarchical organization.

For a rational management of the pavements, the whole paved surface is split into different areas, based on a hierarchical principle at different levels, also known as Pavement Grid Map. The first level consists of the zones of operations (branches), with different functions: runway, taxiway, links, parking, service roads, etc. These areas are divided again into Homogeneous Sections, i.e. sections with similar design features:

  • Period of construction,
  • Thickness of the pavement and its status of load capacity
  • Traffic or strain level in general.

This division is essential to define the decay curves of each section, and take a decision on the most appropriate maintenance activities to be carried out.

Each section is further split into an adequate number of elementary zones of constant surface area (300-400 m²), defined according to the different indices associated with them (PCI, roughness, load capacity, friction, etc.). For each zone, the indices of degradation are sampled with respect to several structural or functional aspects.

Road-Scanner Survey
The trajectories made by the MMS Road-Scanner are reported on an extra layer, thus facilitating the consultation of the collected data. These trajectories allow the identification on the cartography of the route visible in the imagery that is being consulted and, vice versa, it is also possible to select the most appropriate imagery and examine the area to be checked. The airport surface is covered by the Road-Scanner vehicle in parallel routes at a distance of 4-5 meters. As for runways and taxiways, the survey direction is controlled with a special software that helps the driver to maintain a constant direction.

Survey of the Status of Surface Degradation
The defects are classified in a catalog according to the ASTM D6433/2003 specifications, with the aid of special menus that assist the user to assess the level of severity. One of the more interesting components of the proposed methodology is the visual detection of defects, assisted by the consultation of the data obtained with the profilometer and the laser-scanners.

The environment of imagery consultation, integrated in the GIS ArcView, allows an optimal navigation on all surveyed  data and also in the defect database. At all stages, the operator can check the activities carried out in the mapping system.

All the detected surface defects are represented on an extra layer, which contain the related geometries (for example: points for holes, polylines for cracking, polygons for alligator cracking, depressions, rutting). On the basis of the defects that completely or partly belong to PCI areas, it is possible to calculate the corresponding indices, and represent them according to the thresholds of the ASTM specifications. The application also allows the consultation of the surface defects of each single PCI area.

Consultation of the Maintenance Status
All the survey results are represented in ArcGIS and can be immediately displayed on the map, or consulted numerically. It is possible in this way to represent the characteristic bearing values (PCN /ACN, elastic modules, layer thicknesses), PCI indexes, longitudinal roughness, etc. Thanks to this type of representations, the intervention activities can be carried out quickly and effectively.

Management of the Intervention Catalog
With this application it is possible to define different maintenance catalogs. The available databases can be integrated with the Tender Specification. Each catalog allows the user to organize interventions by type, for instance structural or functional interventions, rehabilitation or localized interventions. This organization has the double goal of improving the organization of the interventions and, at the same time, of providing the system with methods for calculating the cost of each intervention. For each intervention, users can define the cost per unit and specify the list of defects that the intervention can solve as well as any residual defect after the maintenance.

Assignment of the Interventions to the Pavement
In order to analyze the cost and extend the residual life of the airport paved surfaces, it is necessary to select the areas and/or the homogeneous sections to which a specific intervention must be assigned. This assignment can be done with a graphic selection directly in the GIS software or filtering areas and sections through appropriate queries to the database according to priority criteria. In this way it is possible to create a Maintenance Plan containing the maintenance interventions selected from the catalog. If the same intervention belongs to different planes, the PMS operator can define different maintenance plans, and compare them in terms of cost, time distribution and useful lifetime of the infrastructure.

Decision Support Tools and Decay Curves
The system also provides tools for the decision support, by simulating different maintenance strategies, the calculation of the PCI and the derived curves of decays. Special functions allow the users to assign the decay curves to the homogeneous sections and therefore to define the timing diagram. Then it is possible to compare the theoretical decay curves with those derived from the observations performed during the monitoring phase. On the basis of these results it will be possible to calibrate the specific curves of the different homogeneous sections.

  • The Road Information Systems for the road network and the related issues (signs, licensing, maintenance, etc.). Siteco has developed a modular suite of products called Road-SIT Asset Management to manage a number of projects, among them the following: SIS-ASPI for Autostrade per l’italia, the test of the Road Inventory of ANAS (the Italian National Road Administration), many tenders of road Global Service (Municipalities of Forlì, Faenza, Pesaro, Province of Florence etc.). The product suite is now used by many public administrations, even of small size.
  • The Pavement Management System Road-SIT PMS Roads and Road-SIT PMS Airports. The two systems use the Mobile Mapping System Road-Scanner equipped with rear high-definition cameras. The powerful lighting plant for nighttime surveys favors its use for the airports. Thanks to the new Road-Scanner and the post-processing applications, a database of road distresses has been built, enriched with severity parameters and punctual descriptive indicators. The software application of the system processes the pavement condition indexes (PCI) and assess the status of maintenance. It’s also an efficient tool to support decisions in developing maintenance and rehabilitation programs.
